1. What the #$%& is an actuary?
I’m asked this question a lot, and I mean A LOT. Frequently it comes during a conversation like this:
Curious Friend (CF): “You have a degree in math? What could you possibly do besides teach?” (Sometimes the teaching part is just in their head and they actually say “What do you do?”. But I know it’s there.)
Me: “I’m training to be an actuary.”
CF: “What the #$%! is an actuary?”
Me: “Have you ever seen the movie Along Came Polly?”
If CF says yes, I respond with: “Ben Stiller in that movie was an actuary. He analyzed risk — remember the computer program?”
Of course, if CF says no, I’m left with the “technical” definition: “An actuary is a business professional who uses math and statistics to calculate and analyze risk. In other words, it’s basically risk analysis, which deals with probability. Most actuaries work for insurance companies.” (Thank you, Purdue.)
2. What products/gadgets/tools do you use in the kitchen?
Feel free to take a look at my Amazon store. I’m in the process of adding all of the products that I use and love to the store, so that it’s easy for you to find them.
If there’s something I love that I can’t find on Amazon, I’ll list it here.
And yes, I purchase everything possible on Amazon.com. (The Prime membership is SO worth it for the free shipping!)
