Hi there! I’m Christina, or The Actuarial Chef. Welcome to my little corner of the web! I’m sure you want to know a little more about the person behind this blog, so here we go
I’m an Actuary (don’t know what an Actuary is? See my FAQs.) by day and a home cook by night.
I grew up in Maryland, graduated from college with a degree in Mathematics and a concentration in Actuarial Science, and started taking the certification exams necessary to be a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries. It is a dreadfully long, difficult process. (You can read about the exam process here or here, if you so desire.)
Now I live in Virginia with my
boyfriend fiance! Ryan and our dog Yoshi, and I work in D.C. for a small actuarial consultant firm, doing actuarial valuation work for the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation (PBGC) – a government agency that insures private pension plans against default. I value terminated/underfunded private pension plans, ensuring that retirees continue to receive their pensions and calculating the pensions of future retirees, using Microsoft Excel and other proprietary software.
That’s about all I can think of right now — I’ll update this page as I think of more things to add 🙂 In the meantime, enjoy a picture of Yoshi as a puppy:
